Who We Are

Picture
My hobbies include golfing, jogging, watching foreign & Korean T.V. Soap Opera on Netflix and Kdrama while on my treadmill, and riding my BMW 1200RT.   I placed 145K miles on 3 BMW bikes and completed two "Iron Butt" rides which require riding 1000 miles in one day: Salt Lake City to Salem and San Diego to Salem -–nice midlife crisis! The best moments in my life are the quiet times I have with the LORD and date times with me dear wife of some 44 years.

David Manock, Ph.D.

Founder and President

I have been married to my spouse, Brenda, since 1975. I was born and raised in Japan, having been adopted at the age of 9. I am Eurasian: my biological mother is Japanese and father is an American with a Scandinavian background. Athletically, I received a scholarship to the University of Oregon and competed as a NCAA varsity gymnast.  I see myself as a reserved introvert having married a wonderful Italian who has pulled me out of my emotional cave. We have two adult children: Jonathan, who lives in LA and works for an Internet company; and Maia, who graduated from OSU with a dual degree in finance & physics.

Integrative Counseling Institute (ICI), formerly known as Northwest Institute for Integrative Counseling & Training (NWIICT), provides pastoral and clinical counseling programs for those seeking help along with providing educational training programs for those in the field of clinical psychology. ICI values and sees each person who comes to us as a gift from God and a personal assignment from Him.

Adhering to ICI’s Core Values & Goals, it is our privilege to serve our students, interns, counselors, therapists, and pastoral counselors as they become fully equipped and grounded: theoretically, clinically, and integratively focused. We believe our students will transform lives and that only the Lord knows the eternal impact from each transformation.

Celtic Spirituality (Christian devotion in fifth century Scotland and Ireland) conceptualized reality as two halves (earth and heaven) that overlapped in what is called “thin places”.  Seemingly five “thin places” can be identified where, in God’s wonderful grace and sovereignty, heaven and earth seem to touch: Worship, Prayer, Word, Sacraments, and Moving Towards the Poor.  The last domain is dear to the heart of Jesus when He said in Matthew 25:40, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever You did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.’” Jesus fully identifies with the poor, the down and out, the depressed, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised. When we move toward them to comfort, strengthen, heal, assist, and advocate for justice on their behalf, heaven and earth touch according to Celtic Spirituality’s “thin places”.

In essence, counseling can be conceptualized as a touch of heaven to the suffering person and as such, it is a sacred movement that God empowers and sustains. Counselors have no less than a call to serve others, incarnating God’s grace, presence, and power. We believe this happens because of the depth of God’s love which transcends our own worth or merit.

In postmodernity, counseling is seen as a hermeneutic process.  Hermeneutics is the science and art of interpretation. The science component of counseling involves learning counseling theories. The art component consists of clinical experiences and being clinically trained and equipped. Educational psychology literature for counseling strongly suggests that counseling programs need to shift from the classroom’s theory focus towards a clinical pragmatic focus. ICI programs have intentionally shifted to a “teaching hospital” model versus a “school” or “classroom” model.  In doing so, we intentionally strive to clinically equip our students to sit and actually do counseling versus being taught about counseling.

If you are passionate about serving others through counseling and witness firsthand their restoration, transformation, comfort and healing, then I invite you to join us here at Integrative Counseling Institute.
